Review of 1" X 30" BELT SANDER 1/3 HP

I bought this for rough shaping of carved spoon bowls and their handles. At the level I am using it the performance has been satisfactory. This is not a precision machine and for the price you can't expect it to be. The cover plate for the belt (made of plastic) has jammed the belt causing it to stop running. It is an easy fix but could be annoying if you use the machine on a regular basis. For the money I got what I needed.Only time will tell how long the motor lasts.

Review of Porter Cable 5" Quicksand Random Orbit with H&L Pad

This sander is such an improvement over my old palm sander.It is light, easy to use (so easy to change sanding pads), and does a good job capturing most of the sawdust put off.It sands clean, even, and quickly. Don't know how I did without it.

Review of Porter-Cable 362VS 4-Inch x 24-Inch Variable Speed Sander

Tough choice this - the Porter Cable 362VS or the Bosch 1276DVS.Both are powerful machines that demand some practice and your undivided attention as they sand so quickly.Deciding factor for me was that the variable speedadjusting wheel on the PC had detents (click stops) while the Bosch justfelt like the adjustment could move on it's own accord. Minor differnce forsure as either tool is up to any sanding job.

I have had no problems with any reconditioned products from Amizon.com in the past.I love my drill press and nail gun.My sander came in just as the previous review.It was covered in sawdust and had some rust.Amizon sent me another one overnight and it was in better shape.I kept it and know that Amizon will take care of me.The return sticker took a while to recieve, after the new one came, but I had no problems sending it back,I guess I need to trust the customers reviews.

Review of Porter Cable 712400805 2-1/2-Inch x 14-Inch Multi-Purpose 80 Grit Abrasive Sanding Belts - 5 pack

I was immediately intrigued when this belt sander came on the market - I always felt there needed to be a more diminutive belt sander for certain operations, things that a quarter-sheet palm sander or a oscilating disk sander just are not right for (for one example, our companyoften has to taper the end of a baluster - this is the tool for the job). Also keep in mind that many people find a larger belt sander hard to control without gouging the workpiece. So I ordered one. As soon as it arrived, it had celebrity status - there are one-hand and detail operations that the other four trim capenters I work with immediately took to this tool to perform, and I am adding a second one to our inventory soon.

Bottom line - this tool is a great asset to any trim carpenter, but any woodworker, particularly a one person furniture making operation or Saturday handyman should buy a 3" x 21" belt sander first, then back it up with this one as you build your tool arsenal (or buy a 3" x 18" belt sander if you don't see yourself ever buying a second belt sander). Also be aware that Home Depot and Lowe's, as well as most brick and mortar retailers don't (yet) carry these new to market small sanding belts (even though they sell the sander itself). This means you will most likely have to get them on Amazon or the like, so you'll have to maintain a stock of belts to avoid having a project suddenly come to a standstill waiting for shipping turn-around times. Ultimately, you'll probably never regret owning any Porter Cable belt sander.

Finally decided to buy this sander, was waiting for others to review it first.Bought it at Home depot, since I needed it immediately for subfloor preparation.It does everything that is promised and it definitely has enough power.Although I found myself using it on high speed.Getting the belt tracking takes a bit of practice but stays centered otherwise.I used it all weekend sanding OSB underlayment for our subfloor in preperation for laminate flooring.It did everything I had hoped for.It did not remove material as fast as I though it would even with 60 grit belts, but this is in comparison with a floor sander, so no fault of the product.Only reason why I rated 4 is because of the sanding shoe that comes with it.I read some other posts on similar sanders and some people had problems with the sanding shoe warping.Well I had that exact same problem with this unit.So I highly recommend getting the graphite impregnated sanding shoe along with this sander.Once the shoe cups in the center, it is essentially useless since there is no more contact with the surface, other than the edges.This thing does get very hot quickly, which would explain the shoe cupping so fast.Light work would probably not see this cupping so soon, but since I was sanding floors, it was immediate.The dust extraction works good, it actually sucks the dust into the bag very well, as compared to other sanders.It is heavy as you hear from others, but this comes in handy where the weight may do some of the work for you by staying in one place.I paid the same price for the sander as amazon had listed, but I also had to pay tax.But got a 10% off lowes coupon from ebay and used it since HD takes competitors coupons, so was less than amazon.Overall I am happy with the unit. Just to give you an idea of how powerful this thing is, it was able to drag me across the room while on my kneepads and I'm 160 lbs.It was kind of fun, when I was done sanding one area, I would use the sander to drag myself to the next room and continue working without having to stand up.

Review of Porter-Cable 352VS 8 Amp 3-Inch-by-21-Inch Variable Speed Belt Sander with Cloth Dust Bag

After purchasing -- and returning -- the Makita 3X18 belt sander, I boughtthe Porter-Cable 352VS (eee my review of the Makita).What adifference!
This sander is powerful.I sanded three layers of old paintoff a door in about 1/2 hr.The body is constructed of metal, giving it anice solid feel.When sanding, you can simply glide the sander back andforth, without having to push down at all.Porter-Cable came up with adesign that gives you a lot of power, but at the same time control overthat power.This is what a belt sander SHOULD be like.
The position ofthe front handle makes sense -- it is up higher than the front of themachine, so you get a good position relative to the sanding surface.Thehandle is also designed to give you a lot to grab onto.
The dust bag isdesigned well.You can swivel it in any direction to get it out of the waywhile you're sanding, and it holds the dust without spilling until you'reready to empty it out.Also, it does a fair job collecting the dust, butyou should never expect any dust-bag system to be perfect.
The meachinismfor loading and unloading sander belts is very good.It is easy to placethe belt in the sander and then tighten it up securely.
The trackingsystem really holds the sander belt in place.I placed the belt on thesander, held it upside-down, running the sander until the belt no longershifted left or right.Then I began sanding, and for the whole time Iworked, the belt did not move from center at all.Because the housing ismade of metal, even if the belt DID move, it would not damage the sander,as it would on machines with plastic bodies.
All told, this sander is agreat combination of power and ease of use.
PS: The 3X21 sander beltsthat Porter-Cable makes (the purple ones) are excellent.
